Favorite Trick won the Jim Dandy Stakes by a nose with a dramatic rally that showed the class of a Horse of the Year, but not many clues to his future. Despite the colt's stirring success here, it remained most unlikely that he would go on to the Travers Stakes in three weeks to challenge Coronado's Quest, who won the $1 million Haskell Invitational today at Monmouth Park, and Victory Gallop, who finished second to Coronado's Quest. Both races were ranked as preps for the Travers and the year-end prize, the Eclipse Award for the best 3-year-old colt of the season. Favorite Trick played the starring role in his part of the show by prevailing in a tight three-horse finish by the length of his nose over Deputy Diamond, who won second by a neck over Raffie's Majesty. Then it was only a length and a half back to Scatmandu in fourth. The Jim Dandy also became a personal triumph for Bill Mott, the trainer of Favorite Trick, coming on the day before his induction into the Racing Hall of Fame. And it punctuated a ringing weekend for Pat Day, who won the Whitney Handicap on Saturday aboard Awesome Again and returned today to win the Jim Dandy with Favorite Trick. ''He proved that he was a champion last year,'' Mott said of Favorite Trick, ''and he was named Horse of the Year, and rightfully so. That was 1997, and he's now shown this year that he's good enough to win at a mile and an eighth. He's never run a bad race other than the Kentucky Derby, and that was at a distance that didn't suit him.'' In the Derby, which was run at a mile and a quarter, Favorite Trick ran eighth. The only other race he lost was the mile-and-an-eighth Arkansas Derby, where he ran third in a scramble behind Victory Gallop. His record now is 11 victories in 13 starts, but Mott again doubted that he could win beyond a mile and an eighth. As for the Travers, run at a mile and a quarter, Mott said: ''It's probably something we're not planning to do right now. I do think we'll stay away from that race, but we'd like to discuss it for about a week or so. Grass is an option for him, and it's something we may look to do down the line because he's worked over it and we know he handles it. A flat mile may suit him because we know if we're thinking about the Breeders' Cup, we obviously are not going to run him in the mile-and-a-quarter Classic. We'd like to keep our options open and find out what it is that he does best.'' Favorite Trick ran third much of the way today, stalking the early speed flashed by Rock and Roll, who led for nearly one mile. Right on his heels came Scatmandu, who briefly poked his head in front as they turned for home. At that point, Favorite Trick seemed to be losing ground. But Day changed paths, found daylight and raced from fourth place to first in the deep stretch, where he stuck his nose in front at just the right time in a gutsy performance. Favorite Trick ran the mile and an eighth in 1:50 flat, paid $5.90 for a $2 bet to win and earned $150,000, raising his career income past $1.5 million. Limit Out, who was one of the early favorites, was scratched a couple of hours before the race because he was coughing. ''Favorite Trick has had a pretty good year,'' Day said, ''but obviously he's not handling the competition with the authority he did last year. But he's getting the job done.''
